Pest Control is more than just spraying chemicals, installing trapping units and placing of baits to kill of Pest Populations. Yes these type of efforts are definitely needed for the success of a program but Pest Control, Sanitation and cutting off food and harborage areas is like love and marriage, you can't have one without the other.
Sanitation is a key part in achieving desired results, if sanitation is poor, then the Pest Control efforts will have less of an effect than if sanitation was up to scratch.
Now harborage site and locations is another key part in limiting and excluding Pests from coming into a desired area. Now even the best of these efforts aren't always 100% successful and that is why a very key part in Pest Control is the limiting or total exclusion of food and water sources. This is why.
This is how long the following 3 Pests can go without food.
Cockroaches can live more than one month without food, Rats up to 2 weeks and Ants can go 10 days.
Then water is a key part of Pest Control, this is how long the following 3 Pests can go without water.
Cockroaches can only survive one week without water, Ants for up to 2 weeks and Rats up to a month, Rats actually draw enough moisture from food sources to quench their thirst.
So if we take these facts into account we can see why it is of utmost importance to keep up sanitation, exclude Pests and limit harborage areas where possible and to limit food and water sources.
