Urban Legend of Winter Pests

Updated: Apr 20, 2022

Most people are aware that one thing that Winter months bring with it, besides the cold weather and hot chocolate movie nights, is the disappearance of some annoying Pests like Mosquitoes, Flies etc. Now over the years there has been an Urban Legend born, that the nasty disgusting little Cockroaches does not live nor thrive in the winter months.

There are 3 common household Pests that I will share with you today, that not only exist during winter months, but there presence in your home can actually increase during winter as they seek shelter from the outside chill. Yes you heard me, you can have double or even triple the infestation count inside your home during winter.

1. Cockroaches

These Pests will not only live throughout winter, they can actually reproduce as long as the temperature is at 10°C. So for the residence of coastal towns in Durban, Durban North, La Lucia, Umhlanga, Ballito, Bluff, Amanzimtoti etc. your cockroach concerns might actually increase during winter. See Sub-Tropical weather regions like the Durban Coast of South Africa actually have an average low of 11°C during June and July, with August picking up to 13°C and May being at 14°C, these are the lows, the days average for these 4 months combined picks the weather up to around 24.5°C

Now some residence might think that because we don't spot these Pests, that they are simply not there, well, studies show that Cockroaches can breed inside your home for up to 2 years before you spot the very first one. Cockroaches can reach levels of infestation of between 900 to 300 000 roaches in your home spreading disease all year round.

2. The next winter Pest to look out for are Rats and Mice, now these creatures are nocturnal and they don't like to be spotted by humans as they know that humans are enemies and not friends, seeking to destroy them.

Now Rats and Mice might be like most humans in that they thrive more in summer, however, in the winter they might be more present in homes, businesses and schools than the rest of the year, making the disease counts higher in winter.

Rats and Mice prefer to breed in the warmer months, however if the inside of your homes temperature and there place of harborage is snuggly enough, they will seek to find comfort enough that breeding will continue.

3. The last Pest that is actually a Pest that prefers the winter and actually thrives in it are Silverfish, commonly known as Fishmoths. They love cold damp places and although they are very active in Summer, when the temperature drops they thrive, maybe because of the thick winter clothes, maybe it resembles the same thing a big fat rump steak does to us.

Female Silverfish can actually lay thousands of eggs and cause a huge infestation within your home or business and cause tremendous damage that could become very costly.

So the take away for today is this, that yes, like most of us, Pests thrive more in Summer, but also like most of us, the Winter Climate drives activity inside rather than out and even brings about more reproduction, remember that food consumption normally increases during the winter months, meaning that it increases the amount of refuse around and inside our homes.

So remember don't think that winter brings life to a stand still, don't allow Urban Legends to fool you and allow Pest Breeding to become out of hand and ruin your summer times. So during winter we must still follow the same rules as we do in summer and maybe just a little more actually.
